Al Azhar University History                                          

Al Azhar University is an Egyptian higher education institution located in the capital city of Cairo. The university was established in year 970 as Islamic Learning Center by Fatimid Caliphate and was conferred university status in 1961. The university currently enrols over 299000 students and is the oldest university in the country.

Al Azhar University Programs, Courses, and Schools

Al Azhar University specialises in offering programs related in Islamic and Quran Learnings but over the years the university has also started to offer non-religious subjects across multiple faculties. Some of the subject offering include Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Astronomy, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

Al Azhar University also offers programs in Geology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Agriculture, Forestry, Sports Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Computer Sciences, and Psychology.

Al Azhar University has an urban campus located in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo next to Al Azhar Mosque. The university although old comprises of modern teaching facilities coupled with one of the most important libraries in the country which houses many historical artefacts, literature, and special collection items. 

Al Azhar University offers facilities such as classrooms and lecture halls, research and engineering labs, university hospital and clinic, medical facilities, and prayer halls. The university also offers dining options in addition to sports facilities and common areas.

Al Azhar University is also ranked amongst top 1000 universities globally in QS World University rankings and amongst top 60 universities in the Arab Region by QS Top Universities. The university is ranked 11th nationally by UniRank.
