Algonquin College Pembroke

Algonquin College is named in honor of the Algonquin First Nations Peoples who first lived in the Ottawa Valley. 

University History

In 1967 Algonquin College was founded in Ontario, Canada. In the beginning, classroom space was rented from the Pembroke and District Collegiate Institute. In October of 1967, the Pembroke Campus got its first batch of sixteen students. In September 1968, full-time programs were started on-campus with 49 students in programs like- Business Administration, General Technology and Architectural Drawing. Arthur Tiesdell was the first Principal of Algonquin College Pembroke until 1974. Donald F. Runge was the First Board of Governors to showcase the campus. The campus was relocated to the former Maple Leaf Dairy on Pembroke Street. In 2004, the Pembroke campus offered its first-degree program when it partnered with the University of Ottawa to offer the four-year collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. By 2017, the campus had more than 1,000 full-time students and was offering 20 full-time programs. In 2017, the campus completed its 50 years and started three new full-time programs- Urban Forestry-Arboriculture; Applied Nuclear Science and Radiation Safety; and Action Sports and Park Development. In 2018, more than 20 international students enrolled on-campus. The students enrolled from countries like India, Vietnam, the United States, Morocco, Africa, Ukraine and Panama.

 Algonquin College Pembroke’s The Kathleen and F. Allan Huckabone Library, plays an important part of the educational experience and is an invaluable resource for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but also for the broad community. The library offers books, e-books and services to support academic studies and enhance research work at Algonquin College Pembroke. University library is focused to provide high-quality library resources, programs, and services to the students. The library provides flexible and well-equipped surroundings for everyone's research and learning needs. The library supports the student learning experience, creation and administration of knowledge, and also contributes to advancements in teaching and research programs.                                                                                                                                            

Housing services-

On-campus- Algonquin College Pembroke doesn’t provide any on-campus accommodation. 

Off-campus- Algonquin College Pembroke assists students in finding off-campus housing near University’s campus. They provide convenient housing to students, faculty and staff at nearby universities. The private rental accommodation near Algonquin College Pembroke includes Apartments, Suites and sharing rooms. Algonquin College Pembroke provides the Housing List as a service to its students. The College takes no responsibility for the student or landlord’s decision to enter into a rental/boarding arrangement. The College does not pre-screen the landlords’ nor the students’ suitability as a landlord/tenants.

Medical services-

Algonquin College Pembroke provides medical services to students. The Health Services encourage students to live a healthy lifestyle in order to achieve their personal, academic and career goals. They also maintain an emergency response team which response immediately to any accidents or injuries involving any person on campus. Primary and urgent healthcare, health clearances, routine women’s healthcare, emergency response and wellness education are all part of the services provided. The staff consists of certified physicians and nurses who are dedicated towards their work and provide high-quality medical care to students.

As an international student, you will need to have specific permits and visas to study in Canada.

Initial Study Permit

All Algonquin College Pembroke students need to have legal status in Canada, and you will need to present your status documents to get your student card. If this is your first time applying for a study permit, you can do it at the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. You can apply for your permit as soon as you receive your Offer of Admission from the University of Toronto and decide to accept. Because the permit legally entitles you to study in Canada, you will need it before you enter the country.

Temporary Resident Visa

Students from certain countries may also require an entry visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), to enter Canada. TRVs are issued by Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC).

CIC’s requirements may differ depending on your specific geographic region. For instance, some CIC offices require proof of English language proficiency in the form of a standardized test (such as TOEFL or IELTS). A medical examination and proof of funding may also be required.
