Allegheny College History
Allegheny College was founded in April 1815 by Reverend Timothy Alden, a Harvard Divinity School graduate. Beginning in 1833, the college was affiliated with the United Methodist Church, but religion is not integrated into the classroom or pedagogy. The first class of four male students began their studies on July 4, 1816, in the absence of any formal academic buildings. Within six years, Alden had amassed enough funds to begin construction on campus. The library, the first structure built, was designed by Alden himself and is a notable example of early American architecture.
Allegheny College Programs, Courses, and Schools
The majors and minors at Allegheny College are divided into three categories: humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Some majors, such as Environmental Studies or International Studies, are considered interdisciplinary. Students must select a minor in addition to a major, and the college encourages "unusual combinations" of majors and minors. A student's major can be in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences, but their minor must be from a different division.
