Top-5 Russian Universities in THE University Impact Rankings

In June 2023, AltSU was included for the fifth year in a row among the top 5 Russian universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings, which assess universities on their contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AltSU ranked 301-400 globally and 4th among Russian universities that year. The university’s efforts on SDG 4 (“Inclusive and equitable quality education”) and SDG 8 (“Decent work and economic growth”) were highlighted.

Active Student Volunteer Movement and Social Engagement

In 2022, AltSU significantly boosted its social engagement, especially in student volunteerism and eco-activities. The University’s Centre for the Development of Volunteerism involved more than 1,500 students, ran 137 events, and reached ~31,000 beneficiaries. More than 800 participants took part in the national “It’s Your Move” student initiative project, which saw 94 student-led projects implemented and eleven students reach the final stage (with three winners) in that year.

Also in 2022, AltSU advanced its internationalisation agenda by creating an educational hub under the Association of Asian Universities, developing 10 double-diploma interdisciplinary master’s programmes (with 250 students) and expanding online course offerings (>300 courses) via a “Digital Greater Altai” open platform.

Method for Identifying Relief Forms on 3D Models of Stone Sculptures

In November 2024, the university’s archaeologists received a patent for a technology entitled “Method for identifying relief forms on 3D models of stone sculptures obtained using photogrammetry.” asu.ru Developed by the Laboratory of Digital Archaeology and Museology at AltSU. Uses photogrammetry + 3D modelling + artificial-intelligence to detect and delineate images carved into ancient “deer stones” and similar sculptures (i.e., distinguishing tool-marks, natural stone features, later inscriptions).

Method for Excavating Ancient and Medieval Burial Mounds

According to the same article, AltSU archaeologists previously obtained a patent in 2022 for a method for excavating ancient and medieval burial mounds. This method reportedly ensures that significant artefacts are not overlooked and helps to restore the original landscape/topography of archaeological sites.
