The university awarded its own internal honors to professors such as Diego Forero, Rafael Gutiérrez, Juan Valderrama, and Carlos Batista for publishing 9 research articles, filing seven patents (including electroporation devices, diaphragm pumps, methane production systems, and solar heaters), and leading impactful psychosocial and legal aid research in migration contexts .
UAN has been an active contributor to the CERN ATLAS experiment through its Experimental High-Energy Physics group, publishing consistently and reinforcing its international research profile in cutting-edge physics .
UAN has hosted the Colombian Olympiads in Mathematics, Computing, Physics, Sciences, and Astronomy since 1991, demonstrating its leadership and commitment to STEM education and national student talent development .
Developed by professors Luis F. Castañeda Melo, Javier F. Castaño Forero, and Rafael Gutiérrez Salamanca (Faculty of Mechanical, Electronic & Biomedical Engineering, Villavicencio campus), this technology enables high-speed internet connectivity through LED lighting—part of Visible Light Communication (VLC). UAN holds multiple patents: • “OWMT” device (Colombian patent) • “LiRe” optical receiver (granted in the USA, 2021, and in Colombia, 2023) Together, these technologies facilitate secure, electromagnetic-free internet access in sensitive environments such as surgery rooms, airports, and fuel stations
UAN was granted a utility model patent (Resolution 47147, August 12, 2020) for a novel machine and method that takes empty beverage containers—such as cans—and transforms them into interlocking tubular conduits. The system mechanically processes and assembles the containers using adhesive, resulting in recyclable tubes suitable for holding liquids like soup, coffee, or hot chocolate. This cost-effective innovation offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional polystyrene or paper products.
