Frequently Asked Questions

Established at Bard College in 1981, Language and Thinking is a three-week, mandatory pre-semester intensive that prepares students for writing and studying at the university level. Successful completion is required for matriculation into BA programs, and students who fail to successfully complete L&T cannot enroll in the regular semester.
Applicants should apply online by filling out the online application form. Other required materials include: motivation statement, graded writing sample, two letters of recommendation from teachers, official transcripts, and proof of advanced English proficiency (TOEFL iBT, TOEFL Essentials, IELTS, Cambridge, or Duolingo) for non-native English speakers. SAT/ACT scores are welcome, but not required.
Applicants should apply online via the Bard College Berlin website or through the Common Application. Admission is based on a selection procedure/qualifying examination. For specific deadline dates based on your chosen application plan, please refer to the admissions section of the website. Applicants must be 18 by the time they start their studies or have a guardian in Berlin.
Bard College Berlin provides financial assistance to qualified students based on their need and does not distinguish between domestic and international students. All BA and Academy Year students who demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply for financial aid, regardless of nationality.
Financial aid and scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, and applicants must reapply each year. The continuation of institutional aid is generally offered at the same amount for up to four consecutive academic years, contingent upon timely submission of required documents, demonstration of a similar level of financial need, and maintenance of good academic standing (GPA of 3 or higher). The application deadline for renewal is April 1st of each year.
Students in their first two years live in on-campus housing, which is located in former GDR embassies and historic Altbau buildings within walking distance of all classroom spaces, supermarkets, and restaurants. Most rooms are doubles shared by two people. Third and fourth-year students typically find housing off-campus in shared living spaces (WGs), though they may apply for on-campus housing with limited spots available.
Citizens of the European Union and EEA countries do not need an entry visa. Students from non-European countries must check with their German embassies to see if they need to apply for an entry visa. You should apply for a student visa (national/long-term visa, or "Nationales Visum"). If you come to Germany with a visitor's visa, German law requires you to return home to apply for a valid student visa.
Students from non-EU countries must apply for a student residence permit from the Berlin immigration authorities (Ausländerbehörde). Bard College Berlin assists students with the application process and required documents during orientations. Your passport will need to be handed in to the immigration authorities, and processing can take up to eight weeks, during which you cannot leave Germany.
