Belmont's Office of International Student Services provides dedicated advising and workshops for international students on F-1 visas regarding Optional Practical Training (OPT). Advisors assist students with the complex application process, timing, and documentation required by USCIS to obtain authorization for temporary employment directly related to their field of study.
For most bachelor's and master's degrees, students on an F-1 visa are typically eligible for 12 months of full-time OPT. Students who earn a degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) designated field may be eligible to apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT, for a total of 36 months.
You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date and up to 60 days after. However, the processing times with USCIS can be lengthy. The international student advisors at Belmont strongly recommend applying as early as possible (90 days before your completion date) to ensure your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is approved before your desired start date.
