Bradley University History

Lydia Moss Bradley established the Bradley Polytechnic Institute in 1897 in memory of her husband Tobias and their six children, all of whom died before Bradley, leaving her a childless widow. In memory of their deceased children, the Bradleys had discussed establishing an orphanage. Mrs. Bradley decided to establish a school where young people could learn practical skills to prepare them for life in the modern world after some research and visits to various institutions. By 1920, the institute had abandoned its academy orientation in favour of a four-year collegial programme. Enrollment grew steadily over the next few decades, and the name Bradley University was adopted in 1946.
