California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) is a public university located in San Luis Obispo, California. It is the oldest of California State University's three polytechnics.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was founded in 1901 as the California Polytechnic School after Governor Henry T. Gage signed the California Polytechnic School Bill following a campaign by journalist Myron Angel. On October 1, 1903, the polytechnic school opened its doors to 20 students, offering secondary-level courses of study that took three years to complete. The school grew steadily, except from the mid-1910s to the early 1920s, when World War I caused enrollment drops and drastic budget cuts forced fewer class offerings.

California State Polytechnic University Cal Poly campus is one of the largest in the United States. It is the second largest land-holding university in California, with 9,178 acres. The lands, which include the main campus, two nearby agricultural lands, and two properties in Santa Cruz County, are used for student education. The Swanton Pacific Ranch, a 3,200-acre (1,300-ha) ranch in Santa Cruz County, California, just outside the town of Davenport, is part of the Cal Poly property. The ranch offers educational and research opportunities, as well as rangeland, livestock, and forestry operations for the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. It also promotes Cal Poly's Learn by doing teaching philosophy, with an emphasis on sustainable agricultural practices and a mix of laboratory and fieldwork.

California State Polytechnic University Various residence halls at Cal Poly provide housing services. Cal Poly's on-campus student housing program, with 6,239 spaces, is the largest in the California State University system. Cal Poly housed 35.9% of undergraduates in 28 dorms on campus in the fall of 2015, and 98.7% of first-time freshmen lived on campus. Furthermore, 28.7% of Cal Poly sophomores lived on campus in the fall of 2015. On the Cal Poly campus, there are five distinct groups of residence halls. The five North Mountain halls, built in the 1950s, are the campus's oldest still in use for residential purposes. Soon after, in 1959, the six "red-brick" halls were completed. The Sierra Madre and Yosemite halls were completed in 1968, and the Cerro Vista Apartments in 2003. The Poly Canyon Village housing complex, designed in the same style as the Cerro Vista apartments, was completed in 2009 at a cost of $300 million, making it the largest construction project in the California State University system to date. On the site of the old Grand Avenue surface parking lot, Cal Poly opened the seven-building complex yakityutyu dorms in 2018.

 California Poly medical services are provided by health services at California Polytechnic State University. Campus Health & Wellbeing in Building 27 provides health services. All enrolled students are served by its physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dieticians, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, and administrative departments. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nurse telephone advice services are available after hours, on weekends, and during non-business hours. To schedule an onsite appointment with a medical provider, please go to your Health and Counseling Portal in your Cal Poly portal or call 805-756-1211.
