Established in 1951, the Cape Breton University is a public university in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the only post-secondary degree-granting institution on Cape Breton Island. The university is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), as well as an Associate Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).

The university comprises of schools and colleges: School of Arts and Social Sciences; School of Professional Studies; School of Business; School of Science and Technology; and Unama’ki College. Some of the prominent programs at the Cape Breton University are Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environment, Community Studies in Applied Theatre, and Sport and Physical Activity Leadership. The university has a strong relationship with the island’s Aboriginal communities and was the first in Canada to offer a Mi’kmaq studies program. 

The total student population at the university is more than 2,500 students of which over 2,100 are enrolled in the undergraduate programs. The student to faculty ratio at Cape Breton University is 17:1.

The university’s art gallery has more than 2,000 pieces, including works by the Group of Seven and Picasso. The university performs externally funded research and the research chairs at the university include Tier 1 & Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs; Viola Desmond Chairs; Purdy Crawford Chairs; Industrial Research Chairs; Former Tier 1 & Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs; and Former Industrial Research Chairs.
