University History

Capilano University is a private university located in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Capilano University that first began as college was founded in 1968. In 1973, they opened their permanent campus in North Vancouver. The University is named after Chief Joe Capilano, an important leader of the Squamish Nation of the Coast Salish people. The University earlier began as Capilano College but in 2008 the college was given the designation of the University. The Capilano University campuses are located on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam, Lil’wat and Sechelt Nations.Capilano University attracts students from around the world. CapU enrols approximately 11,600 students each year, 8,300 in for-credit programs and 3,300 in non-credit courses.

Campuses

Capilano University main campus is situated in North Vancouver, with kálax-ay the Sunshine Coast campus located in Sechelt and Capilan University Lonsdale, an extension of the main campus is situated in the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood of North Vancouver.The University also has the Tszil Learning center at the Lilwat nation in Mount Currie, British Columbia.

The main campus of the University is surrounded by a lush green forest and huge mountain that gives fresh air, that gives the students an inspiring atmosphere in which they learn and grow. The other campus is located in the village of Sechelt, midway up the Sunshine Coast. The campus is friendly and the classes are small in size that facilitate close connections between faculty and students. The third campus is located at the Lonsdale, on the second floor of The Shipyards development in North Vancouver. This campus offers courses in continuing studies. The campus is centrally located near the pier and is adjacent to various cafes, restaurants, outdoor public rink, and water park. There are seven classrooms as well as flexible spaces and has a very unique interior design.

Capilano University Library is a student-centred library that values inquiry,and the importance of information. Their goal is to make all the resources accessible to the students and the faculties. The library has a huge collections of resources both in digital and print. On- Campus: Capilano University Housing/ Accomodation services provides an reasonable, safe and convenient housing options, supported by live-in residence advisors. There are different residential buildings that provides accomodation to near about 300 students of the University. The residential buildings have double occupancy rooms and single occupancy rooms. The Full time Capilano University automatically are eligible for health and dental plan of the Capilano University. The general medical services are available to students at no cost basis on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the spring and fall terms. There are also First Aid services available for the students. Capilano University Visa and Immigration support

The U.S.A. issues different types of visas to students.

  • A full-time student would receive an F-1 or M-1 visa.
  • Your spouse and children would receive F-2 or M-2 visas.

There are various athletic events always happening in the campus. The University athletic teams are 23 Division 1 sports teams. Capilano University has different centers and buildings for sports activities, like the: Stokes athletics center, DeGol field, Immergrun Golf course, stokes soccerplex and the red flash field. The Saint Francis University Sports clubs compete against some of the best teams of Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia. The sports that are beings played are baseball, bass fishing, golf, ice hockey, rugby, soccer, table tennis, ultimate frisbee, and wrestling.

Capilano University Health Center gives priority to the wellbeing of the whole community of the University. They are working closely with other areas such as the Counseling Center, the UPMC Center for Rehabilitation Services, Sports Medicine, and Exercise Physiology departments to promote health and wellness on the campus of Saint Francis University. Capilano University Part-time jobs

Students get an opportunity to work on campus wile studying. Employers are made aware of students who are eligible for federal work study and these students are to be given priority in the hiring process. A maximum of twenty hours (20) per week may be worked during periods of enrollment. The current wage rate is $7.25/hour. Students are paid on a bi-weekly basis for the number of hours worked.
