American Baptist clergyman and civil rights advocate Ralph David Abernathy Sr. In 1948, he received his Baptist ordination. He was a mentor and personal friend of Martin Luther King Jr., who led the civil rights movement. In addition to co-founding and serving on the executive board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), he worked with King and E. D. Nixon to establish the Montgomery Improvement Association, which sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. After King was assassinated in 1968, he became president of the SCLC and organized marches and protests for disadvantaged Americans, including the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D.C. Marvin Stephens Arrington Sr. (February 10, 1941 – July 5, 2023) was an American politician in Atlanta and a judge in Fulton County, Georgia's Superior Court. In 1969, he was elected to the Atlanta Board of Aldermen, which was the forerunner of the current City Council. He presided over the council for 17 years until his unsuccessful 1997 mayoral campaign.
