Numerous significant inventions and research initiatives have come from De Montfort University (DMU), which is situated in Leicester rather than London. Among the noteworthy inventions and fields affected by research are:
Prosthetic Limbs from Recycled Plastic: Dr. Karthikeyan Kandan and his colleagues invented a ground-breaking method for making affordable, long-lasting prosthetic limb sockets out of recycled plastic bottles. Many amputees in India have already benefited from these sockets, which are produced for about £10–£12, a substantial decrease from the industry norm of £5,000.
CPR+Aid Instrument: Harry Coe, a student of product design, created a straightforward, non-electronic plastic tool to instruct people on the proper pressure required for CPR. When the proper amount of pressure is applied, the device makes audible clicks, which gives users confidence to effectively perform life-saving chest compressions.
In 2019, Dr. Karthikeyan Kandan and his colleagues first revealed and published their creation of inexpensive prosthetic limb sockets made from recycled plastic bottles. In order to test the prosthetics on patients, the scientists worked with Indian organizations including the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) in Jaipur during the research's incubation period in 2017. In August and September of 2019, news stories about the successful development and trials in India went viral.

To lower household energy use, researchers created the "Wattbox," a clever energy-saving gadget and computerized heating management system. Additionally, they developed the EcoVisum energy dashboard, an online platform that shows real-time energy usage data for various buildings or residence halls to encourage individuals to participate in energy-saving competitions.
