East China Normal University History

East China Normal University also known as ECNU is a public research university located in Shanghai, China. The university was established in the year 1951 after the merger of Great China University and Kwang Hua University which were established in 1924 and 1925 respectively. The university started off as a centre for a teacher training but evolved into one of the most research-intensive universities in China.

East China Normal University Programs, Courses, and Schools

East China Normal University comprises of 24 schools and colleges, 2 colleges and 5 research institutes, with 58 departments offering 79 undergraduate programs. Some of the courses on offer include Economics and Management, Humanities and Social Science, Chinese Studies, Ecological and Environmental Sciences, of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Psychology and Cognitive Science, and Computer Science and Software Engineering to name a few.

East China Normal University also comprises of 3 affiliated schools such as NYU Shanghai, Asia-Europe Business School and ECNU-UNC School of Sino-American Innovative Education. The research centers include Institute of Estuary and Coastal Research, Institute for Advanced International and Regional Studies, Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, Institute of Arts, and Si-mian Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities.

East China Normal University Campuses

East China Normal University has two campuses in Minhang and Putuo and covers an area of 220 hectares. The campus is home to wide green spaces and thereby referred to as Garden University by the locals. The university campus offers various sports facilities such as outdoor track, outdoor basketball courts, indoor basketball courts, and indoor tennis and badminton courts.

East China Normal University offers frequent shuttle bus services between both campuses. In addition to restaurants, cafes, shops, and study spaces, the university also offers dedicated international student support desk and counseling services to its students.

East China Normal University Achievements

East China Normal University is one of the few universities in China to maintain joint research centres with prestigious universities such as Cornell-ECNU Center for Comparative Culture, KUL-ECNU Sino-Euro Culture Research Center, ECNU-UBC Joint Research Core Group on China in Modern World, and Intercultural Education and Communication Research Center with Humboldt University of Berlin.

East China Normal University is regarded as a Class ‘A’ Double First-Class University by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The university is regarded as Columbia of the East and works closely with China Meteorological Administration, State Oceanic Administration and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
