University History

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE was established in 1972 by the Member States of the European Community. The credit for the ideological origins of this institution goes to The Hague Conference of 1948 and the Cultural Conference of 1949. The need for a European institution was emphasized during the conference. Six member states Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed the establishment of the EUI in 1972 as a pillar of research and development, along with the idea of ​​cultural exchange among European countries. The European University Institute Convention came into force in 1975. For the first time in 1976 the university opened its doors to 70 scholars with its mission "to promote the advancement of learning in areas of particular interest to the development of Europe". The European University Institute is particularly well-known for promoting post-graduation, post-doctoral and research; which tries to put forward the European perspective through cultural and science in social science.

University infrastructure & services  

Campuses

The campus of European University Institute is full of natural scenery and very beautiful. This is located in the state of Florence surrounded by Tuscan hills. From here it is five kilometers away from Fiesole which is a very beautiful city of Florence. From this place you will feel the historical background of the Renaissance period; you will also get to see the villas and gardens developed in that period.

Libraries

The university has its own library. It took more than 50 years to develop this library. The biggest feature of this library is the rich library for the subjects of social sciences. This library has been developed in every way be it its infrastructure, or its collection of books or its services. Today this library has earned international reputation as a social science research library. An attempt has been made to give the library a multi-national framework. The Library has the status of European Documentation Center (EDC), an official depository of EU publications and documents.

Housing services

If you are looking for accommodation in EUI then you don't need to panic. The university is a residential campus institution. In which there is accommodation within the campus. The university has its own 71 apartments, which are provided on a 12, 24 or 36 monthly basis from 1 September every year in the academic calendar. Available on a 12-18 month basis between two academic years for administrative staff who are temporarily employed in the University. There are mainly two types of flats available single and sharing. The Institute has a residential campus outside; there are flats at two places, the details of which are as follows-

There are flats in two places, the details of which are as follows - the first is in Ponte alla Badia, in short which is called PAB. It has about 60 apartments. The second is Pian di Mugnone (PDM). This is located in Mugnone, Fiesole. Regular bus facilities are available from EUI to both the places. Each apartment has the following facilities – 

  • Living room,
  • Kitchen-Kitchens are equipped with a basic kitchenware set (plates, glasses, cups, and cutlery). 
  • Personal bathroom balcony
  • Gas-powered independent heating system
  • Wi-Fi
  • 6 parking spaces,
  • Shared laundry facility (detergent included).

Bed linen, pillows, blankets, towels, ironing board, vacuum cleaner, drying rack, are not provided by the authority. You have to arrange all this by yourself.

Flats Charges - Each flat has a different room-wise rent, but here is the average rent - in PAB, for a residence of 4 to 36 months, a total of 875 euro, per month. 200  Euro per month for 1 to 3 months residence. For the PDM 528 euro per month for 4 to 12 months, and 200 euro per month for 1 to 3 months. You can apply for flats in the month of April. You will need some documents for flats- 

  • Officially signed EUI Flat rules and regulations. 
  • Scanned copy of the deposit Bank transfer (the deposit is equivalent to one month's rent. Without this payment, the declaration of acceptance will be invalid. This amount will be rented when the rental agreement is signed. It will be a deposit). 
  • A scanned copy of the final hygiene payment (€ 60.00) paid with the deposit. 
  • A copy of a valid ID document (including partners); 
  • A copy of VISA for non-EU citizens (including partners). 
  • Bank details (bank name, IBAN, Swift or BIC code); 
  • Country and place of residence; 
  • Codice Fiscale (tax number, available from Agenzia delle Entrate).

Medical services and wellbeing

EUI Counseling Services provides a professional, safe and friendly space to talk about what you are worried about while respecting your values, choices and lifestyle. This service is open to researchers, fellows, partners and collaborators and is free of charge. If you need an ambulance in emergency then you can dial 118.

Airports nearby

The Nearest airport for EUI is Florence. From EUI to Florence airport is about 7 kilometers away, it takes about 45 minutes to get to the airport from the university. Buses are available regularly from EUI to the airport.

Internship

The Institute may offer internships to internships who want to gain practical experience in an international environment. Internship positions are filled according to the needs of the institute, and the decisions regarding the assignment of these internship positions are final. 

International students info, Visas & immigration support

Non-EU/EEA fellows who enquire a visa to visit Italy, should file their request for a special Visa (Type D - Mission) with the relevant Italian Embassy/Consulate. The EUI assists fellows providing them with complete information and issuing special letters of visa support and extra documentation to be presented to the Italian Embassy/Consulate. Non-EU/EEA dependents (spouse/children) accompanying fellows during their occupy the EUI can also receive a letter of visa support from the EUI.  Please contact the relevant officer for complete information through EUI official website.

Campus life

Structure of buildings in campus date from the Renaissance era and have been meticulously restored along with their landscaped gardens. Prestigious lectures, events and workshops on a wide range of topics are open to all staff in the campus. Seamless access to the EU Libraries and Historical Archives.The Language Center offers a variety of language and academic skills courses and support in English, Italian, French, German and Spanish.

 Food & drink

There are numerous canteens and bars serving lunch and snacks from Monday to Friday except for EUI holidays.

Sports, fitness, club, Student/Residential Life in EUI

There is a wide range of sports that are run through the EUI. You become part of the EUI community through these activities. These take place both on and off-site. These activities are of cultural and sporting nature. At present there are twenty-five such clubs. Ongoing activities include the EUI Choir, two soccer clubs (men and women’s), rowing, running, yoga courses, theatre and dance, and there are many more. There is also a small EUI gym; you can also plan for that. Those who do not participate in the educational activities of the Institute have the possibility to join the Partners Group of EUI which meets twice a month. The group organizes various activities, exchanges experiences and offers the various company. EUI Partners is a group for partners of EUI Fellows/Researchers/Staff. You have to live in Florence to join. The group provides a social network and (practical, cultural) information about living in Florence to newcomers who live here, while their partners are engaged in the European Union.

Job Opportunity  

You can do job along with studies in university, EUI also provides you job oppornity. For posts like teacher, administrative posts, research associate, you can apply within the campus itself. The official website of EUI receives regular notices for jobs.

Student Safety

The European University Institute is constantly working to improve the safety and security of its working environment and strives to ensure the highest standards achieved in practice throughout the EUI campus. Health, Safety, Committee has been constituted by the University. A data committee was also formed to review health and safety data.

Crime Around the area

EUI situated in Florence. The crime rate in Florence is not so high. Florence is 80% safest place in Europe.

Famous courses

There are some famous courses Ph.D. in various social sciences subject, L.L.M. and Post-Doctoral in various subjects. People also can apply for visiting fellows. During this period you will be access EUI facilities, such as library, seminars, email and canteens.

Admission, fee and program description-

Masters program- 

  •  LLM program in Comparative European and International Laws. This is one year program. The application date for 2022 admission was 1/11/2021 and the closing date was 31/01/21. Program will be starting 01/09/22. English proficiency is must for the course. There is no fee for those candidates who belong from the EU member states as well for UK students, for EUI associate members state tuition fee will be 12000 EUR as well for non EU member states. There are two stages in the admission process- on the basis of application candidates are called for inteview. The second stage is of language test.
  •  Master in Transnational Governance, this is 2 year course. Fee for this course 14000 EUR.
