Federal University of Santa Maria History
The Federal University of Santa Maria is a Brazilian public university settled in Santa Maria, within the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It was established in the year in 1960, by Professor Jose Mariano da Rocha Filho. UFSM's presence in the municipality of Santa Maria is one of the reasons why the city is sometimes called "university city" or "culture city".

The Federal University of Santa Maria offers Basic and Technical courses, it also provides 66 undergraduate program and postgraduate programs. It also provides specialization programs, Master and Ph.D. program and provides 11 distance education courses for students. The university is divided in 9 centers which offer courses for undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses are Centre of Arts and Language, Centre of Natural and Exact Sciences, Centre of Rural Sciences, Centre of Health Sciences, Centre of Social and Human Sciences, Centre of Education, Centre of Physical Education and Sports, Centre of Technology, Centre of Higher Education of Northern Rio Grande do Sul. The university has more than 1,847 Academic staff, 4,780 administrative students and 28,307 students, including 20,834 undergraduate students, 5,064 postgraduate students and other students 2,409.
Federal University of Santa Maria Campuses
The Federal University of Santa Maria has four campuses: the most one in Camobi, Santa Maria; one campus within the municipality of Silveira Martins, close to Santa Maria; and 2 smaller ones in northern Rio Bravo do Sul, within the municipalities of Frederico Westphalen and Palmeira das Missões. In Santa Maria, however, the courses of Law, Business, Accounting, Psychology, Economics, International Relations, and Dentistry are still offered off-campus, in the city centre.
