Federico Santa Maria Technical University History
Federico Santa Maria Technical University is a private university which is located in Valparaiso, Chile. It was established in the year 1926. It is one of the most prestigious engineering universities in the country and Latin America, and gives special emphasis to basic sciences, engineering and technical fields with a more recent growth into economics and business sciences. The UTFSM was the primary Chilean university to confer a doctorate degree in engineering in 1962 and therefore the first higher-education establishment in Latin America to confer this degree.

Federico Santa Maria Technical University offers undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees. The university also offers 21 bachelor’s engineering degrees, 12 Masters of Science degrees and 8 Ph.D. degrees. The department has 20 full-time professors (2016 data), 17 with Ph.D. degrees (85%). Additional to the Bachelor of Sciences in mechanical engineering (BSc.), the department offers the graduate programs of Master of Science (BSc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in mechanical engineering. The department has also made substantive efforts to connect with its alumni. The university also has more than 635 academic staff including 18,329 students, 17,390 undergraduate students, and 939 postgraduate students.
Federico Santa Maria Technical University Campuses
Federico Santa Maria Technical University has four campuses and two branch campuses. The one campus is Casa Central, in Valparaíso, the second one is campus Santiago Vitacura and Campus Santiago San Joaquín, the third one Campus Guayaquil, located in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and the fourth one is Sede José Miguel Carrera, located in Viña del Mar.
The main UTFSM campus (or Casa Central) is found in an urban center, covering most of the front space of Los Placeres hill, on the grounds of the previous Pudeto fort. This campus includes more than 3 hectares of green areas making it the biggest urban park in Valparaiso, despite it being closed to the public.

Federico Santa Maria Technical University, In 2008 it was chosen as one of the most remarkable national architectural works of the 20th century. The university honorary degrees offer to Georges Mikenberg in 2019, physicist, for his work in particle physics and support of the UTFSM participation in CERN research programs. Raul Zurita in 2015, and 1st UTFSM scholarly person to get it, for his successful career in literature. Wolfgang Riesenkönig in 2014, for his achievements advancements in applied science in Chile.
Since 2010 UTFSM has been awarded nearly US$8 million for seventy-six research projects. Many of those projects involve national and international collaborations with prestigious establishments in a geographic region.

The UTFSM has been historically perceived as one of the most prestigious engineering schools in the country and more recently, with the appearance of national and international rankings, has been placed among the top Universities in Chile and South America. It is ranked 1st in Chile and 2nd in South America by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014-2015. The university always has been committed to its motto of “From the Shadows to the Light”.
