Everything You Need to Know About Application Requirements at Ghent University

1.    Diploma Requirements

    •    Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree to be eligible for a master’s program. The specific admission depends on prior education and the chosen program. 

    2.    Initial Master’s Programs

    •    Eligible applicants include:

    •    Holders of an appropriate Belgian academic bachelor’s degree.

    •    Holders of a foreign university bachelor’s degree or a higher education bachelor’s diploma of at least three years.

    •    In some cases, applicants may need to complete a preparatory or linking course (45 to 90 ECTS credits) before admission, depending on previous studies. 

    3.    Advanced or Subsequent Master’s Programs

    •    Eligible applicants include:

    •    Holders of an appropriate Belgian master’s degree.

    •    Holders of a foreign university master’s degree or a higher education master’s diploma.

    •    Most advanced master’s programs require a master’s diploma; certain programs may accept a bachelor’s degree of at least four years. 

    4.    Language Proficiency

    •    Many master’s programs are taught in Dutch; however, some are offered in English. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction. For English-taught programs, a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 94, TOEFL PBT score of 560, or IELTS score of 6.0 is typically required. 

    5.    Additional Requirements for Non-EEA Students

    •    Certain faculties require standardized test scores:

    •    Faculty of Economics and Business Administration: GMAT or GRE scores are mandatory for non-EEA applicants. EEA applicants are strongly advised to submit these scores, as the faculty offers scholarships to students with outstanding results.

    •    Faculty of Engineering and Architecture: GRE scores are required for non-EEA applicants.

    •    Faculty of Sciences: GRE scores are required for non-EEA applicants applying to specific master’s programs, including Biochemistry and Biotechnology, and various Bioinformatics tracks.
