The university’s main campus is located in University Park, Illinois, on 760 acres of wooded landscape that includes several lakes and nature trails, providing a scenic environment for learning and recreation. The Facilities Development and Management Department is responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of all university facilities and grounds, which span approximately 600,000 square feet of classroom, office, and public spaces
The GovState experience includes a comprehensive student life, both on and off campus, with on-campus housing, club sports and recreation, civic engagement, and international student services.. The university offers more than 70 student clubs and organizations, providing a dynamic and engaging campus experience for both residence hall residents and commuter students


The Office of Career Services assists students and alumni with all facets of their career development, including skills identification, career exploration, job search strategy, resume writing, interviewing, networking, negotiating offers, employer research, and writing job search correspondence.
The below information is required while
completing the university application :
1. To enroll as a freshman at GovState, you must have earned fewer than 24 college credit hours since earning a high school diploma or earning a GED.
2. Applicants are required to have a minimum unweighted high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
3. All applicants are required to submit official high school transcripts or GED. Students with college credits are also required to submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended.
4. ACT and SAT scores are optional for GSU admission. To submit scores for consideration, use GovState's ACT School Code (1028) or GovState's SAT School Code (0807).

One alumna’s decades of leadership and advocacy have earned countless honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of African American Museums and the Margaret T. Burroughs Legacy Award
Governors State University was named as the Best College in the Chicago Southland, leading the 2025 “Best of Chicago’s Southland” readers’ awards. The university received hundreds of votes declaring it the best, edging out several local colleges and universities.

Governors State University recognized outstanding contributions of two GovState founders and several faculty members for their commitment to the university and research. One founder received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 and a Superior Achievement Award on April 20, 2024.
