Grand Canyon University History

Grand Canyon College was established as a non-profit institution in Prescott in August 1, 1949. The college's trustees voted in 1984 to transform the college into a university in time for the school's 40th anniversary in 1989, becoming Grand Canyon University. It also switched governance from the Southern Baptist Convention to the GCU Board of Trustees at this time.
