What are the language requirements for studying at HHU?

If you are applying for a German-language study programme as a foreign national, you must provide one of the following certificates: DSH-2 or DSH-3, TestDaF with grade 4 or 5 in all sections, Goethe Certificate C2, or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, among others. For English-taught programmes, check with the specific department.

How do I apply for a subject with local admission restrictions (Numerus Clausus)?

The application process comprises two steps: First, register in the hochschulstart portal to receive a BID and BAN. Second, apply via the Heinrich Heine University application portal, stating your BID and BAN. The application period for the summer semester runs from 3 November to 15 January.

When will I receive my admission decision after applying?

For restricted-admission subjects, you will be notified after the application deadline, which is usually 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester. First admissions are typically sent out around early August (winter semester) or early February (summer semester).

What is the German National Scholarship at HHU?

The German National Scholarship is a €300 per month funding programme for high-achieving students. It is financed via 50% public and 50% private funding, with the federal government providing €150 per month matched by private donors. The scholarship can be received from the first semester of a Bachelor's degree to the completion of a Master's degree or state examination.

When can I apply for the German National Scholarship at HHU?

The application process for the 2026/2027 academic year begins on 1 July 2026 and ends on 31 August 2026 (for all HHU students) or on 15 September 2026 (for first-semester students or those transferring to HHU from other universities to pursue a master's degree). The applicant portal is activated on 1 July 2026.

Does HHU offer housing assistance for students?

A limited number of dorm rooms are reserved for students. However, there are waiting lists for the halls of residence because the places are not only cheap but also very popular. The university therefore recommends applying for a place in the halls of residence as early as possible.

What private housing options are available near HHU?

Private options like shared flats (WGs) or apartments can be found via platforms such as WG-Gesucht or ImmobilienScout24. Monthly rent starts at approximately €240. It is advisable to look for accommodation well in advance of the semester start.

What is the post-study work visa for international graduates?

After graduating from a German university, non-EU students can apply for an 18-month residence permit to search for a job related to their degree. Students must look for a job within these months. This residence permit allows graduates to stay in Germany for up to 18 months.
