Hong Kong Baptist University was established as Hong Kong Baptist College with the support of American Baptists, who in their early years provided the school with operating and building funds and staff. The college was the first institution of tertiary education established by a collaboration between a Mainland university.

HKBU was originally founded in 1956 as Hong Kong Baptist College by the Baptist Convention of Hong Kong. It was granted university status and renamed Hong Kong Baptist University in 1994.
The Department of History and Geography was established in 1960 within the college. By 1978, History became an independent department, and in 2018, it celebrated its 40th anniversary as a standalone academic unit.
In 1983, the university became a fully funded public tertiary institution, marking a major milestone in its development and expanding its role in Hong Kong’s higher education landscape.
