The HZ Changemaker Award was launched to recognize and celebrate students, alumni, and staff who make an exceptional entrepreneurial contribution to society. This initiative, part of the New Business Models research, aims to increase the visibility of those driving positive change and to inspire the entire HZ community
HZ and Dow Benelux formalized a major strategic partnership to collaborate on research and education. This alliance brought real-world industrial challenges into the classroom and provided students with unparalleled internship and career opportunities, enriching academic programmes in chemistry, water management, and logistics
The establishment of the New Business Models research group, led by Ageeth van Maldegem, marked a significant step in fostering entrepreneurship and social innovation at HZ. This lectoraat focuses on how businesses can create both economic and societal value, directly supporting the university's mission of contributing to a better world
HZ University of Applied Sciences became the first higher education institution in the Netherlands to be awarded the Green Key quality mark. This achievement recognized the university's pioneering efforts in sustainability, from its use of local and organic products in its catering to its overall commitment to reducing its environmental footprint
Innovation and research at HZ University of Applied Sciences are deeply rooted in addressing real-world societal challenges, particularly those concerning the Delta region. The university's research centres, or "lectoraten," work in close collaboration with companies like Dow and regional authorities to find practical solutions for issues related to water technology, the energy transition, and social vitality
Data scientists and water management experts at HZ created an artificial intelligence model that can predict harmful algal blooms in the complex Delta waters. This tool analyzes historical and real-time data to forecast bloom events, giving water managers and shellfish farmers a crucial early warning to mitigate economic and ecological damage.
HZ engineers designed and tested a robust floating solar panel system specifically engineered to withstand the harsh conditions of the North Sea, including strong waves and saltwater corrosion. This innovation opens up new possibilities for large-scale renewable energy generation without using valuable land space, leveraging the region's maritime expertise.
In collaboration with regional companies, HZ scientists pioneered the development of sustainable building materials by combining locally grown seaweed with flax fibers. These bio-based composites offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials, with applications in interior design and construction, supporting the circular economy in Zeeland.
HZ researchers designed and deployed a network of advanced sensors to continuously monitor parameters like oxygen levels, temperature, and salinity in the Oosterschelde estuary. This real-time data helps authorities and shellfish farmers better understand and respond to changes in water quality, protecting the local ecosystem and aquaculture industry.
Researchers at HZ developed an innovative method to create and manage freshwater lenses beneath saline farmland. This technique involves injecting and storing fresh rainwater in the underground soil during wet periods, which can then be extracted by crops during dry spells, making agriculture more resilient to climate change and saltwater intrusion in coastal areas like Zeeland.
