JSU’s football program has been named Black College National Champions four times: in 1962, 1985, 1996, and most recently in 2024, underscoring its athletic excellence.
In 2023, JSU became the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and the first institution in Mississippi to receive the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Founders Award, recognizing its significant contributions to innovation and invention.
In October 2022, JSU hosted ESPN’s College GameDay for the first time, bringing national attention to the university and its football program.
In 2015, JSU became the first university in Mississippi authorized to establish a School of Public Health, aiming to address critical health disparities and enhance public health education in the region.
JSU was recognized as an Apple Distinguished School in 2013 and again in 2015, highlighting its innovative integration of technology in education. The university provided new iPads to all first-time, full-time freshmen, enhancing the learning experience.
