University History

James Madison University is a Public University based in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley at Harrisonburg, Virginia. The University was founded in the year 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for women but later on in 1977 it was renamed as James Madison University in the honor of President James Madison. In 1946, Men got enrolled into various courses of the University. The University that started small is now home to 20,000 students and has 139 programs to offer.

James Madison University campus is situated in Harrisonburg, Virginia.James Madison University campus is located just two hours from Washington, D.C., the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia blossoms in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. In the beginning, the University only started with two buildings that are known today as Darcus Johnson hall and Gabbin hall but now the main campus of the University has 148 major buildings. The campus has five divisions: Bluestone, Hillside, Skyline, lakeside, and the village. James Madison University campus also has a lake and botanical gardens. The campus comprises of auditorium, various administrative and academic buildings, library, recreation center, several residential halls, and many other buildings. Campus is full of long-standing traditions that will give all the students a fulfilling and memorable experience.

On-campus:James Madison University Housing Services are a home away from home. The housing services provide great accomodation facilities for a comfortable living within the campus. All first year students are required to live on-campus in the residence halls for the entire first academic year at James Madison University both fall and spring semester. James Madison University Medical services

James Madison University has its own medical center. The services that are being offered by the medical center are in-house laboratory tests, immunizations, injection, tuberculosis, STI Testing, office visits and many others. There is no charge for most office visits, and charges for lab testing, procedures, medical supplies or prescription medication are kept as low as possible. James Madison University Student Clubs are actively conducting various events in the university. The student clubs and organisations give the students an opportunity to learn different skills, plan and execute events and also widen their horizons. There are different clubs in the campus working towards different agendas. Their clubs and organizations cover a wide range of activities and interests, from academic societies, the arts, club sports and intramurals, to activity and event coordinators, and leadership programs. At the beginning of each semester, James Madison University clubs and organizations come together at Student Org Night. This event includes music, food and raffles, but above all, it gives the students an opportunity to meet everyone and grab all the opportunities around to get involved on campus. Community service is also an important aspect of James Madison University culture. There are 100+ non-profit organisations supported by student volunteers. These experiences offer students the opportunity to help others while gaining invaluable understanding about life. There are also alternative break programs for the students. James Madison University has 18 Division 1 intercollegiate athletics teams, a growing list of club sports teams and a vibrant intramural sports programs for the students. James Madison University is a great place to be considering the following:

James Madison University Health and Wellbeing

The Student Affairs department of the James Madison University gives primacy to the wellbeing of the student community.
