John Jay College of Criminal Justice History

In 1964, the Board of Higher Education convened a committee that recommended the establishment of an independent, degree-granting school of police science. John Jay was founded as the United States' only liberal arts college with a criminal justice and forensic focus. Following that, the City University of New York established the College of Police Science (COPS), which admitted its first class in September 1965. Within a year, the school was renamed John Jay College of Criminal Justice to better reflect its educational goals.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. John Jay College of Criminal Justice confers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees, as well as certificates. The school is best known for its criminal justice, forensic psychology, and forensic science programmes, which are complemented by a liberal arts curriculum. The student-faculty ratio is 16:1, and the freshman retention rate is 78% on average. The college provides in-person, online, and hybrid courses. The school employs 1,100 faculty members, with more than one-third of them working full-time.

Campus

 The campus of John Jay College of Criminal Justice is made up of six buildings. It is in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood, close to Central Park, Columbus Circle, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center. The college's newest structure, a 13-story, 625,000-square-foot (58,100 m2) facility in midtown, opened in 2011 and takes up an entire city block.

The New Building, as it is known on campus, has been recognised as a "overlooked architectural masterpiece" by The Real Deal, a leading New York City real estate news publication, which recently listed the building among the "ten best buildings to see in America" and one of the country's "coolest works of architecture."

Haaren Hall, also known as the 'Tenth Avenue building' or simply the T building is the main campus building at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The majority of the administrative departments and classrooms are housed at 899 tenth Avenue.

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice library, as an academic department, is central to the educational mission of the college. Cardiovascular Fitness Center provides sports and fitness facilities to John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Students who want to improve their physical fitness can take advantage of the Cardiovascular Fitness Center's numerous programmes. Counseling services centre provides health and well-being services at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Counseling Services Center offers free psychological and counselling support services to John Jay students in order to meet their mental health and developmental needs. Counseling services may be provided by our diverse group of full-time or part-time Doctoral or Master's level staff members, as well as by graduate externs or interns working under the supervision of licenced clinicians. The Center is a fully accredited site that meets the International Association of Counseling Services' standards. All services are provided at no cost.
