In 2022, it established a Hydrogen Technology Research Center to advance hydrogen fuel systems and hybrid renewable energy solutions. In 2021, it supported the creation of a Regional Innovation Platform to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry in Hungary. By 2023, university teams developed hydrogen-powered and fully solar-powered vehicle prototypes showcased at international platforms, highlighting progress in alternative propulsion technologies. Alongside these initiatives, its engineering faculties have contributed to patented developments in mechanical and materials technology, reinforcing the university’s role in practical, industry-oriented research and sustainable technological advancement.
In 2023, the university’s engineering and alternative energy research teams developed a hydrogen-powered vehicle prototype showcased at the UN Climate Summit (COP28) in Abu Dhabi. This innovation reflects active research into alternative propulsion systems using hydrogen fuel, highlighting the institution’s engagement in cutting-edge automotive energy solutions.
Also in 2023, student and faculty teams at the university’s technical faculty created multiple alternative-propulsion vehicles, including a 100 % solar-powered Megalux car and an all-electric “Supermoto” motorbike. These projects combined sustainable energy research with hands-on engineering design, enabling the vehicles to compete internationally, such as in the Solar Challenge competitions.
In 2022, the University launched its Hydrogen Technology Research Center to advance innovation in hydrogen-based energy solutions. This centre focuses on developing hybrid energy systems combining solar, battery and hydrogen fuel cell technologies, improving hydrogen combustion processes, and researching advanced storage methods using composite pressure vessels. These efforts aim to support a sustainable energy economy and contribute to global carbon-neutral goals.
On 18 May 2021, John von Neumann University helped establish the Regional Innovation Platform in Kecskemét, designed to promote R&D cooperation between academia, industry, and regional partners.
