In November 2024, UCA researchers earned top honors at El Salvador’s National Science and Technology Awards (Conacyt). Violeta Martínez and Farhang Shadman secured second place in Engineering & Technology for innovations in catalytic reactor design, while Esmeralda Valdivieso received commendation in Public Health. These accolades highlight UCA’s growing research capacity and its international collaboration trajectories
At El Salvador’s 2023 Higher Education Excellence Awards, UCA won two top prizes: one for promoting women in STEAM fields through mentorship programs with Fundación Muchas Más, and another for its microfinance research initiative aligned with private-sector needs. The first initiative advanced gender inclusion in mathematics and engineering, while the second provided strategic insights for microenterprise growth. These awards underscore UCA’s role in combining academic excellence with real-world impact
In February 2019, UCA introduced Central America’s first net-zero energy building on campus—designed as a live-in laboratory for sustainable architecture. Equipped with solar panels, energy-efficient materials, and integrated monitoring systems, the building serves as a teaching tool for engineers and architects. It also hosted regional workshops on green construction. This structure underscores UCA's leadership in environmental innovation within higher education
Starting in 2018, UCA’s Department of Psychology and Public Health established the annual Ignacio Martín-Baró Research Prize, honoring outstanding undergraduate theses in psychology. Named for the Jesuit scholar-martyr, the award encourages rigorous, socially relevant research focused on Salvadoran society. It has since become a benchmark for quality student scholarship, reinforcing UCA’s human rights tradition and fostering academic excellence
UCA’s law school consistently ranked among the top performers in the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court competitions from 2013 through 2025. Their moot teams secured finalist positions in 2013 and 2014, showcasing legal acumen and advocacy skills on an international stage. This achievement reflects UCA’s commitment to human rights education, practical training, and the formation of socially conscious legal professionals
In May 1990, UCA received the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award in Communication and Humanities in recognition of the university's unwavering defense of human rights and freedom of expression. This honor was a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the Jesuit scholars and collaborators murdered in November 1989—Ignacio Ellacuría, Segundo Montes, and their colleagues—whose voices championed social justice amid a brutal civil war. The award placed UCA on the global stage, highlighting its intellectual resistance to oppression. It also reinforced the value of academic freedom and cemented the institution’s identity as a moral and social beacon in El Salvador and beyond
In October 1984, UCA launched Radio Universidad, the nation's first academic radio station. Initially an experimental outlet on 99.5 FM in Managua, it grew into a major student-run media platform. With national reach and professional-standard production, the station provides hands-on journalism experience, community programming, and a voice for youth across Central America. Its establishment marks UCA’s milestone in media and communications education
In June 1990, 39 Spanish universities bestowed their highest distinctions—gold medals—upon UCA in a ceremony at the University of Salamanca, led by Spain’s Education Minister Javier Solana. The medals acknowledged the martyrs of UCA and symbolized solidarity with the institution’s mission amid violence. A collaboration agreement between Spain and UCA was signed at the event, deepening academic ties and support. The gesture represented international recognition of the university’s social commitment and its advocacy for peace and justice during a period of extraordinary hardship
Between February 19–23, 1979, UCA hosted the Second Symposium on Appropriate Technology for Developing Countries, drawing experts and students to deliberate on grass-roots innovation. This event spurred the application of affordable, sustainable solutions tailored for rural and underserved populations—topics still resonant in UCA’s focus areas like environmental engineering and social innovation. The symposium helped integrate applied technologies into UCA's curriculum and cemented its role as a regional thought-leader in sustainable development
In collaboration with Edibon, UCA’s Chemical Engineering Department installed an advanced UDCC—a computer-controlled continuous distillation unit. This lab-scale system allows students to experiment with distillation variables, study matter and energy transfer, and optimize industrial separation methods. Through real-time data acquisition and interactive software, the UDCC enhances experiential learning and deepens understanding of thermodynamic and separation principles in practical scenarios
Alongside the UDCC, UCA also installed a suite of computer-controlled chemical reactors (QRC), including service units (QUSC) and continuous stirred-tank reactors (QRCAC). These systems provide hands-on experience with reactor operation, kinetic studies, and comparative analyses of reactor types. The integrated units allow monitoring and manipulation of reaction conditions—flow rates, temperature, mixing—offering students unparalleled practical exposure to industrial chemical processes
Part of a collaboration with IQS (Spain), UCA opened the first university-level Chromatography and Thermal Analysis Laboratory in El Salvador. As part of a new Master in Chemical Engineering program, the lab includes high-performance liquid chromatography and thermal analysis equipment. This enhancement equips students and researchers to perform advanced material characterization, chemical separation, and thermodynamic property studies, significantly upgrading UCA’s research capabilities
A 2022 project developed by UCA researchers produced a low‑cost internet‑of‑things (IoT) air-quality sensor using open‑source hardware (ESP32, PMS5003 sensor) and cloud-based platforms. This station measures particulate matter and provides live data accessible via web, improving environmental monitoring capabilities beyond the three official stations in El Salvador
In 1997, Salvadoran engineer René Núñez Suárez developed the turbococina, an energy-efficient stove that cuts firewood use by approximately 95%. A stainless-steel cylinder with ten air injectors and dual fans, it uses pressurized combustion to channel heat effectively into a cooking surface. Originally aimed at reducing fuelwood consumption in rural households, the turbococina earned recognition at the UN Climate Change Convention and won national inventor awards in 1999. In 2002, Núñez received the Leadership in Climate Technology award and was honored by El Salvador’s legislature as a “Most Deserving Son”
In late 1996, UCA planted the seeds of El Salvador’s first comprehensive digital seismic monitoring system, named “TALULIN.” This network of accelerographs was installed across central regions, later integrating broadband seismic stations via CEL’s geothermal field in Usulután. By 1997–98, these were upgraded with SEISLOG acquisition software and SEISAN analysis tools, enabling near–real-time seismic data transmission to the Central American Seismic Center in Costa Rica
