Jim Valentine attended college on the GI Bill, a WWII veteran's benefit, and has remained there ever since. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley. Working with fossil marine faunas, he conducted early research on what is now known as macroecology, which resulted in a book titled Evolutionary Paleoecology of the Marine Biosphere. These investigations are still ongoing today, mostly with collaborators Kaustuv Roy and Dave Jablonski. The ability of discoveries in molecular developmental biology to explain, or at least give a general grasp of, the kinds of morphological patterns discovered in the fossil record has captivated him more lately; his most recent work, View Less
