In 1973, the Kemerovo Pedagogical Institute was replaced by the Kemerovo State University. With five branches spread across the oblast at Belovo, Anzhero-Sudzhensk, Novokuznetsk, and Prokopyevsk, as well as Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, it is a preeminent center for education and science in Kemerovo Oblast.
