Leiden University is a Public research university which was established in the year 1575 and is located in Leiden. The university is the oldest university in the Netherlands and has also expanded to the city Hague and occupies a number of buildings in the historic center of the city including a college building in Lange Voorhout. 

Leiden University has the following six faculties in Leiden campus and one faculty in Hague campus: Faculty of Archeology, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Medicine / LUMC, Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The university has three Interfaculty institutes such as African Studies Center, Honors Academy, and Interfaculty Center for Teacher Training, Educational Development and Training (ICLON). The university comprises a Summer School which offers a unique range of summer courses and lets the students broaden their knowledge or share their expertise with fellow students. The university also has other modes of studying like A la carte and contract students, Guest student, Higher education for mature students, Non-examination/Auditing student, Part-time student, and Free Online Courses / MOOC. 

Leiden University has more than 26,900 Students coming from 120 different nationalities. The university has more than 1,352 faculty members.

Leiden University provides scholarship opportunities to the students on the basis of academic excellence.  The university also comprises a Library which provides access to a rich and varied record of scientific publications in support of the teaching, research and strategic goals of the university. The Library has close to 3 million journal article downloads per year and more than 44,000 electronic journals full text available for the students.

1. Leiden University Excellence Scholarships

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is open to outstanding Non-EU/EEA international students enrolling in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

Students must have achieved excellent study results in their previous education, this being relevant to the Master’s program for which they are applying. As an indication, the student is amongst the top 10% of graduates in his/her previous study program. Note: proof of ranking is not required – this information is pure to indicate the level of competitiveness.

Applicants must have a non EEA* passport and may not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering).
