The Lingnan University was founded in 1888 by an American Presbyterian Church as a Christian College in China in Guangzhou. It started with a small group of students and went through lots of phases which led to its closure and finally re-emerged in 1967 as one of the pioneers in education and relocated in Hongkong.

Lingnan University traces its roots back to 1888, when it was established as the Christian College in China by the American Presbyterian Mission in Guangzhou. Over the years, it underwent several name changes and relocations due to political instability, eventually re-emerging in Hong Kong in 1967.
Lingnan University is located in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong. The institution moved to this purpose-built campus in 1995 and has since developed into a research-focused liberal arts university.
Lingnan became a degree-conferring institution in Hong Kong and was officially renamed Lingnan University in 1999. Prior to that, it had evolved from a post-secondary college and gained self-accrediting status.
