Governor Huey Pierce Long, Jr. established the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine in 1931. It was originally located at 1542 Tulane Avenue, next to the newly rebuilt Charity Hospital, which opened in 1939.

 Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans Housing services

The residence hall at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans provides housing services. The Residence Hall's 160,000 square feet house 186 living units (apartments and dorm rooms) for single students and married couples. Tenants have access to secure ground-level parking beneath the building. Table tennis, billiards, and a basketball court are available both inside and outside. The Residence Hall, located at 1900 Perdido Street, is linked to the Medical Education Building via a covered, elevated walkway for easy and quick access to classrooms, labs, the library, and the cafeteria.

The Residence Hall has the following living units:

  • Unfurnished two-bedroom apartments
  • Unfurnished three-bedroom apartments
  • Dormitory rooms for single occupancy

 The student health clinic at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans provides medical services. Primary health care, mental health assistance, immunizations, women's health exams, and exams for away rotations/residency are all available at the center. Faculties who provide students with health or psychiatric care are not involved in student grading, evaluation, or promotion. Immunization/prevention (unless exempted for religious or health reasons) Students will be required to have an annual tuberculosis screening, as well as tetanus, shot every ten years. Nurse-only appointments for immunizations can be scheduled by calling (504) 412-1995 (campus health clinic) and (504) 412-1366. (St. Charles clinic).
