LMU's mission is to create knowledge while carrying responsibility for the future of science, for the future of young people who come to learn, and for the future of a society seeking progress, meaning, and trust. As articulated by President Professor Matthias Tschöp upon taking office in October 2025, the goal is an open, courageous, high-performing, and humane university "that is world-class—and lives global responsibility". LMU's primary task is the education of young people, illuminating issues from various angles to provide a fully-rounded education by imparting technical competence and social skills, while instilling a lively historical awareness and a commitment to human values. In this spirit, LMU upholds the legacy of the White Rose movement, a group of LMU students who actively resisted Nazi ideology during the Second World War. As a genuine "universitas," LMU has the unique opportunity and a deep obligation to deal with the ever more complex questions facing humankind by creating interdisciplinary solutions.

Ferenc Krausz, Chair of Experimental Physics/Laser Physics at LMU, developed experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for studying electron dynamics in matter. These pulses are now being used in medical diagnostics to identify specific molecules in the blood and detect certain types of cancer at an early stage. This work earned Krausz the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2023.
