Marietta College History
Marietta College was founded in 1797 as the Muskingum Academy, marking the beginning of higher education in Ohio. A committee of Marietta citizens, led by General Rufus Putnam (the "Father of Ohio"), met in April 1797, only nine years after Ohio was settled, to establish a college.

Marietta College offers over 50 undergraduate majors in the arts, sciences, and engineering, as well as graduate programmes in Physician Assistant, Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and Athletic Training. Marietta College is a Phi Beta Kappa liberal arts college that requires all students, regardless of major, to take Quantitative Reasoning, Artistic Expression, Civilization & Culture, Social Analysis, and Scientific Inquiry courses.
Marietta College Achievements/USP
Marietta College is the sole liberal arts college that provides a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering. The college's engineering offerings were expanded in 2019 with the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering. Marietta College keeps a partnership with the University of International Relations, a university affiliated with the People's Republic of China's Ministry of State Security.

Housing services
Marietta College's housing and residences departments provide housing services. Co-ed residence halls are available at Marietta College. There are no curfew hours, but the main doors of the residence halls are locked 24 hours a day. Computerized card access is used to gain entry. All student rooms have traditional door and window locks. All members of the Office of Community Living, including Assistant Directors and Community Advisers, live in the residence halls and are on call 24 hours a day. All staff members receive training in enforcing residence hall security policies and attend lectures and seminars about campus safety and security.

The office of community living oversees Marietta College's residential life. The Office of Community Living assists students living on and off campus with their concerns and provides students with assistance in a variety of areas. These areas include student conduct, educational and social programming, assisting with a roommate and personal problems, and dealing with residence hall maintenance issues. Community living collaborates closely with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and can help students with a variety of issues. Resident Assistants (RAs) are specially trained sophomores, juniors, and seniors assigned to each section of a residence hall. They help individual students with personal, academic, and social concerns, and they help residents develop a sense of community. The Marietta College Police Department is primarily in charge of campus law enforcement. Officers from the MCPD patrol the campus, parking lots, residence halls, and on-campus fraternity, sorority, and theme houses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
