Mary Baldwin University is a university that is privately run in Staunton, Virginia. The university was established in the year 1842 as one of the oldest universities in that region. The university initially started as Augusta Female Seminary. It started as a women's college and later became a co-educational institution. The university is named after one of its students Mary Julia Baldwin. In 1963, it started allowing male candidates into the university. In 1977, Mary Baldwin University was the first university in Virginia to offer an adult degree program. In 2015, the university finally changed its name to Mary Baldwin University after the recommendation of its Board of trustees.
