A Masdar Institute PhD student received a “Medal of Top Emiratis” for groundbreaking research on extracting valuable compounds from desert algae. Additionally, a student-developed Smart Solar-Powered Ventilation System for Vehicles won two awards: • Ministry of Interior (Graduate Studies) • Innovator Show 2016 (Sustainability & Life Sciences category) These achievements underscore the Institute’s emphasis on socially impactful innovation.
In 2014, the Institute marked a research milestone: • Held four approved U.S. patents, with 42 applications pending, and 69 invention disclosures. • Faculty and students published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, including two book chapters and two full books, along with more than 380 conference proceedings. • Ranked among the Best Arab Region Universities for research excellence by U.S. News & World Report.
At the inaugural Emirates Energy Awards, Masdar Institute was celebrated in multiple categories: • Energy Efficiency: Acknowledged for its buildings’ ability to reduce energy and water demand by approximately 40% relative to international standards. • Large Energy Project: Masdar’s Shams 1 Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant received this award. • Young Professional Achievement: Engineer Abdulaziz Al Obaidli was recognized under the Young Professional Energy category.
In 2014, the Institute launched the iSmart initiative, led by Dr. Sgouris Sgouridis. This platform fostered interdisciplinary systems-based research across critical infrastructure sectors—energy, water, transportation, urban development, and telecommunications—aligning academic output with national strategic goals.
The campus was architecturally designed by Foster + Partners to function as a prototype for Masdar City and sustainability innovation. It was the world’s first building fully powered by renewable solar energy, with over 5,000 m² of rooftop photovoltaics and a 10 MW solar field that produced 60% more energy than the campus consumed—feeding the excess back into the grid. Its façades and courtyards utilized passive design strategies to naturally cool pedestrian walkways and buildings
