Mayo Medical School Minnesota History

Dr. Raymond Pruitt, a cardiologist, was named the first dean of the Mayo Medical School (now Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine) by the Mayo Foundation in 1970, and the school was officially established the following year. It was the 110th medical school in the United States and the second in Minnesota when it opened on September 5, 1972, with an inaugural class of 40 students. In its history, the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine has been renamed twice. The first occurred in 2017, when the school's name was changed from Mayo Medical School to Mayo Clinic School of Medicine to better reflect its focus and function. The second was in November 2018, when it was renamed Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in honor of businessman Jay Alix's $200 million donation.

MCASOM is a school within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science (MCCMS), the Mayo Clinic's education division. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and awards the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree (LCME).  MCASOM's administrative headquarters and primary location are located at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. With 11.5 million square feet of medical and research space in a single location, it is the largest medical school campus in the United States. The Mitchell Student Center and Guggenheim Building house educational activities, particularly in the Kendall-Hench lecture hall. Students also take classes and perform laboratory exercises in the Stabile Building, which houses a cutting-edge anatomy lab and a Multidisciplinary Simulation Center.

The Plummer Building houses the Mayo Clinic Libraries system, one of the world's largest medical libraries, which provides students with access to approximately 400,000 bound volumes and 4,800 medical and scientific journal subscriptions. Mayo Clinic has 16 libraries spread across four states to support and serve your academic needs. Many Mayo Clinic Libraries are professional libraries open to Mayo Clinic students, residents, fellows, health care professionals, faculty, and employees.
