The Urban Mobile Robotics project, launched in 2025 in cooperation with partners such as Forum Virium Helsinki, explores robotics applications in urban environments — using cities themselves as testbeds for robotic sensing, mobility and environmental data collection solutions. It focuses on creating prototypes that address real urban challenges. Metropolia’s Minno® innovation project framework isn’t a single device but a structured innovation process embedded in the curriculum (introduced around 2008) that produces hundreds of practical solutions every year. Students participating in these projects have developed real outcomes such as: Physiotherapy game tools using motion sensing tech for rehabilitation, Blood donor mobile alert system concepts that inspired real app development with partner, Ambulance simulators for emergency care training, Design concepts for healthcare and service environments. These outputs are co-created with working life partners and often move from prototype to further development.
Metropolia’s Smart Mobility Innovation Hub has been involved in piloting automated electric shuttle buses (sometimes called robot-buses) on open roads to explore emission-free, last-mile and public transport solutions. These pilots began around 2016 and have continued through projects such as Sohjoa Baltic and related initiatives in the Baltic Sea Region, involving international partners to develop future urban mobility concepts and practical deployment frameworks.
