UTEM strengthened its scientific output by securing ten FONDECYT projects, reflecting the university's commitment to high-impact research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
UTEM distinguished itself among over 70 participating projects in the STEAM-IE Hidrotalent 2023 competition, showcasing innovation and excellence in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics education.
In the RESIES 2023 evaluation, UTEM achieved the highest score among Chilean higher education institutions, earning the "Coigüe" category certification. This recognition underscored UTEM's leadership in integrating sustainability into its governance and operations.
UTEM has been involved in research focusing on MXenes, a class of two-dimensional (2D) materials known for their exceptional electrical properties. The studies explore the potential applications of MXenes in energy harvesting devices, including sensors, solar cells, photodetectors, batteries, and supercapacitors. The research emphasizes the development of MXene-based sensors with high sensitivity, solar cells with high efficiency, and batteries offering long lifetimes and excellent mechanical stability, making them suitable for advanced wearable devices.
In 2023, UTEM researchers conducted a study on the utilization of waste marble, an industrial byproduct, as a partial replacement in concrete mixtures. By applying advanced machine learning techniques such as Group Method of Data Handling Neural Network (GMDH-NN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), K-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), and Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), the research aimed to predict the impact of waste marble on the compressive strength of concrete.
Established in 2015, ProteinLab UTEM serves as a digital fabrication laboratory that promotes interdisciplinary research and technological exploration. It facilitates technology transfer between UTEM and the broader innovation ecosystem, focusing on the development of products, services, and applications in collaboration with industry and public-private institutions.
