Midwestern State University

Midwestern State University is a public liberal arts college situated in Wichita Falls, Texas. It had 5,141 undergraduate students in 2020. It is the only public liberal arts institution in the state.

Midwestern State University History

Midwestern State University, originally known as Wichita Falls Junior College, was renamed Hardin Junior College in 1937 when it relocated to its current location off Taft Boulevard. A senior division was added in 1946, and the school was renamed Hardin College. The name was changed to Midwestern University in January 1950, with the junior college division remaining Hardin Junior College. The university joined the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in March 1948. The university added a graduate school in January 1959, which received full approval from the State Board of Education in August of that year. Midwestern University programs were added to the Texas Colleges and Universities System on September 1, 1961, by the action of the 56th session of the Texas State Legislature, and the junior college division was dissolved. The Texas Legislature changed the name to Midwestern State University in 1975.

Midwestern State University Programs, Courses, and Schools

Midwestern State University is divided into seven colleges, each of which offers 16 undergraduate with 43 majors and 30 minors, as well as 9 graduate programs with 28 majors and 15 minors. Midwestern State University is Texas' only member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, and it was the state's first public university to establish a core curriculum. The university also belongs to the Association of American Colleges and Universities as well as the Association for Core Texts and Courses.

Midwestern State University Achievements/USP

Midwestern State University's USP/achievement is that it is one of 36 public institutions of higher education in Texas. Midwestern State University is Texas's only university to join the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). MAU also offers a discounted tuition rate to non-Texas residents of the United States. The university was recently named to the list of "10 Public Schools with the Lowest Out-of-State Tuition" by U.S. News and World Report.

Campus

Midwestern State University's campus is in Wichita Falls, Texas, about halfway between Oklahoma City and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The 255-acre Midwestern State University campus is nestled among the city's residential area and includes 70 buildings, numerous playing fields, and an outdoor recreational facility near Sikes Lake.

Housing services

The residential department at Midwestern State University provides housing services. Legacy Hall, McCullough-Trigg Hall, Killingsworth Hall, and Pierce Hall are the four residence halls at Midwestern State (the latter of which is currently vacant for construction). Sundance Courts and Sunwatcher Village are two of the apartments. In 2016, dining services underwent a major renovation that included the addition of new storefronts. Mesquite Dining Hall and Maverick's Corner are two dining halls.

Visas & immigration support

The International Student Services Office (ISSO) at Midwestern State University is a critical component of the United States government's homeland computer security system known as SEVIS. The ISSO is led by the Campus Coordinator - USCIS Designated School Official, who is authorized by the Code of Federal Regulations to issue Form I-20 to qualified international students. All foreign student addresses, enrollment, health insurance, employment, and travel must be reported in real-time to SEVIS by the ISSO. The ISSO assists international students in maintaining their F-1 student visa status.

The recreational center at Midwestern State University provides sports and fitness services. Welcome to the Student Wellness Center at Midwestern State University. Your 51,000-square-foot facility was constructed in the summer of 2009 and is outfitted with the best equipment on the market (CYBEX and TRUE). We have over 75 free weights and machines, as well as 50 different pieces of cardiovascular equipment, each with an entertainment monitor (television). There is also an indoor track, an outdoor aquatics area, a fully equipped gymnasium, and cutting-edge group fitness rooms.

Part-time jobs

Part-time jobs are permitted at Midwestern State University. F-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Any F-1 student who works more than 20 hours per week will be reported as committing an apparent violation of status in the SEVIS system, in accordance with US federal regulations. Please work with your supervisor and keep track of your schedule to correct any accidental early or late punches and stay under 20 hours per week.
