Know moreIn 2023, EPN was ranked as the top research university in Ecuador by Scimago Institutions Rankings. This recognition highlighted its leadership in scientific publications, patents, and collaborations with international research networks.
In 2015, EPN received national recognition for its outstanding contributions to environmental research, particularly in water treatment technologies and renewable energy solutions. These initiatives were developed by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, promoting sustainable development across the country.
In 2002, EPN’s engineering programs were officially accredited by the Ecuadorian Council for Evaluation, Accreditation, and Quality Assurance in Higher Education (CEAACES). This accreditation confirmed the university’s commitment to high academic standards and positioned EPN as one of the top engineering schools in Ecuador.
EPN launched the country’s first satellite tracking station in 1992, reinforcing its leadership in telecommunications and aerospace research. This achievement enabled better satellite communication studies, data collection for weather forecasting, and advanced space technology research.
In 2021, EPN’s Geophysics Institute introduced an advanced network of smart seismic sensors capable of more accurately predicting tremors and earthquakes.
In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 crisis, EPN bioengineers and mechanical engineers designed and produced low-cost mechanical ventilators using locally available components.
In 2017, EPN’s Renewable Energy Research Group developed a mobile solar-powered desalination unit capable of converting seawater into drinking water. This invention was targeted for coastal and Galápagos communities facing freshwater shortages.
In 2013, EPN researchers and students contributed key technology to Ecuador’s first nanosatellite, Pegaso. Specifically, EPN helped design the satellite’s control and stabilization mechanisms as well as its power distribution system. Although Pegaso was a national project, EPN’s engineering contributions were crucial to its success.
