In 2017, funded by the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, Dr. Natalia Ruiz Vargas led groundbreaking research on the rare Tillandsia moscosoi—a species endemic to Dominican cloud forests. This work reactivated the herbarium and strengthened biodiversity documentation at UNPHU
UNPHU conducted a comprehensive study on Dominican Republic medicinal plants in 2015, led by Dr. Carles Roersch. This research led to the reactivation of the university's herbarium, originally founded in 1975, and created the foundation for national policy-making and pharmacological studies
