University History

The Boston Young Men's Christian Association, the first in the United States, founded an Evening Institute for Young Men in May 1896 to combine, organize, and strengthen its classes that had formed over the previous 40 years. Algebra, accountancy, literature, French, German, Latin, geography, electrical, music, handwriting, and physiology were among the roughly 30 subjects offered. There was also support for a banjo club, photographic club, symphony, and weekly legislative debates and deliberations. With a YMCA membership, "every young man of moral character" was promised an excellent education. The institute began teaching in 1898 in a new headquarters facility on the junction of Boylston and Berkeley streets in Boston. A new YMCA building was built on Huntington Avenue after a fire.
