Northern Illinois University also known as NIU is an American university located in the town of DeKalb, Illinois. The university was established in 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School followed by subsequent mergers with a number of educational establishments in the region and finally conferred university status in 1957. The university currently enrolls over 20,000 students.
