Northern State University's campus infrastructure includes a blend of historic and modern buildings surrounding a park-like campus green, with numerous building projects underway, all within easy walking distance of downtown Aberdeen. The Beulah Williams Library houses over 175,000 books, 35,000 federal and state documents, a computer lab, a smart classroom, and a DDN room, with online catalog and electronic collections accessible 24 hours a day. The Avera Student Center is the hub of campus life, housing dining facilities, student organization offices, and essential student services including Admissions, Health Services, Disability Services, Campus Security, and the Counseling Center. The Johnson Fine Arts Center features a Black Box Theatre, Berggren Recital Hall, practice rooms, an art gallery, and the Jewett Theater. The Barnett Center includes a swimming pool, racquetball courts, wrestling room, weight room, and Wachs Arena, which seats 8,000 and contains a 160-meter indoor track. The Harvey C. Jewett IV Regional Science Education Center provides state-of-the-art labs for biology and chemistry.





Student support services at Northern State University are comprehensive and designed to promote academic success and personal well-being. The Student Success Center offers free tutoring in Dacotah Hall 101, including math tutoring for math and statistics courses, reading assistance for all disciplines, writing support for all types of assignments, and tutoring in other subject areas upon request. Supplemental Instruction is available for certain general education courses, using learning teams to assist groups of students. Academic advising assists students with choosing a major, selecting classes, and navigating degree requirements. TRiO Student Support Services is a federally-funded grant program to assist first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities, offering intensive advising, financial assistance, academic counseling, career exploration, and cultural events. The American Indian Circle Program provides cultural programming and academic support to Northern's Native students. Disability Services provides support and advocacy for students with disabilities, committed to a program of accessibility. Testing Services provides proctoring services, placement testing, and CLEP testing at no charge for NSU students. Career services are available at the Career Center, located in the Student Center 207, with resources for selecting a major or career field, graduate or professional school planning, occupational research, professional development, and employment assistance all available at no cost.
Student life at Northern State University is vibrant and engaging, with Campus Recreation and Intramurals having made a vibrant return to campus, bringing renewed energy, connection, and wellness to student life. Hundreds of students have participated in a wide range of events and activities, including a Co-ed Volleyball League and Beach Volleyball, Cornhole Tournament, Kickball and Glow Kickball nights, Yoga and Pilates Night in partnership with a local fitness studio, March Madness Bracket Challenge, 5v5 Co-ed Basketball League, Campus Walking Group, Open Gym hours, and Fitness Center promotions. Over 90% of survey respondents said participating helped them feel more connected to campus, and students shared that they "got to meet more students and hang out with friends in a fun atmosphere" and appreciated "being able to stay active and keep my competitive edge". These offerings have not only promoted physical wellness but also fostered a stronger sense of community, belonging, and school spirit. The program's home base, Dacotah Hall Gym, is currently undergoing renovations, including upgrades to the Fitness and Dance Studio. Students can jump into clubs, organizations, leadership, athletics, music, service opportunities, and campus events, and Aberdeen shows up for Northern State University students whether it's part-time jobs, internships, volunteering, or community events.



Housing facilities at Northern State University offer a variety of on-campus living accommodations to suit the needs of every student. NSU offers six residence halls, each providing a unique and exciting living opportunity. Great Plains East, opening in August 2018, is Northern's first pod-style living arrangement, where each pod provides a living space, community bathroom, and private bathroom for residents, with each bedroom furnished with beds, desks, and wardrobes. Each pod is single-sex and holds up to 16 residents, and Great Plains East houses a TRiO-Pod and the Honors-Pod, along with open lounges with fireplaces and the Grid Market. Great Plains West, also opening in August 2018, is a suite-style hall featuring full suites and semi-suites, with full suites furnished with seating in the living room and each room having a wardrobe, two desks, and bunkable beds. Residents can also enjoy Northern's only game-cleaning room for hunting enthusiasts, and each floor houses lounges with study rooms and community gathering lounges. Kramer Hall is a three-story suite-style hall offering full suites and semi-suites, with rooms coming with beds, desks, and wardrobes, and all Kramer residents receive a microfridge. McArthur-Welsh Hall is a four-story co-ed traditional style hall, and Briscoe Hall is a three-story co-ed traditional hall offering double occupancy rooms with WiFi, cable TV, a full kitchen, and laundry facilities. Wolves Memorial Suites, built in 2017, houses up to 144 students in a variety of suites and semi-suites. All halls are designated as non-smoking and alcohol is prohibited on campus.

Campus safety at Northern State University is a priority, led by the director of student rights and responsibilities and Title IX coordinator, and comprises Student Rights and Responsibilities, Northern CARES, the Security Systems Oversight Committee, the Threat Assessment Team, the campus police officer, the Annual Security Report, Timely Warnings and Emergency Alerts, and Title IX. A Campus Alert System, also known as "Everbridge," is in place for all students, faculty, and staff. Building security measures ensure that access to the residential portion of all halls is locked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Northern State University also offers campus safety and security services like late-night transport and escort service, lighted pathways and sidewalks, and controlled dormitory access via key or security card. The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities strives to inspire students to achieve their personal and educational goals, embrace institutional values, and display respect for all members and guests of the university, adhering to an efficient, fair, and ethical student conduct process.



Career support at Northern State University is available through the Career Center, located in the Student Center 207, with resources to assist students in selecting a major or career field, graduate or professional school planning, occupational research, professional development, and employment assistance all available at no cost. Students can also get assistance with résumés and cover letters, personal statements, and interview skills, and Career Services maintains WolfWork, an online platform that provides employment resources to students, alumni, and recruiters alike. Part-time local jobs, including federal Work Study, are posted on WolfWork, as well as full-time professional positions and internships related to NSU fields of study. Staff also publish campus-recruiting events, including regular job fairs and other career development activities on site. The NSU Career Services Center's goal is to help students transition to professionals and match their interests, skills, and values with majors, career options, and employment opportunities that fit their professional and personal goals. Career Pathways provides resources and guidance to students at the beginning of their academic journey, allowing students to explore various career options, align those options with the appropriate academic major, and receive intensive academic and career services.
