Northwest Missouri State University History

The Missouri Legislature established five districts in the state in 1905 to establish normal schools, forming a state teacher college network.

Maryville won the Northwest district competition with an offer to donate 86 acres (34.8 ha) (on the northwest corner of town) and $58,000 for the site of a Methodist Seminary. Kirksville (Northeast - now Truman State), Cape Girardeau (Southeast), Springfield (Southwest - now Missouri State), and Warrensburg were the other districts in the network (Central – now Central Missouri). The school was renamed Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College in 1919, and with it came the ability to grant baccalaureate degrees. The Board of Regents reduced the name to Northwest Missouri State College in 1949. Northwest was elevated to university status on August 14, 1972, allowing it to offer master's degrees. Northwest Missouri State University became its new name.
