Otis College of Art and Design is a Los Angeles-based private art and design school. Otis College of Art and Design is a 501(c)3 non-profit institution that is a national leader in the education of artists and designers.

Otis College of Art and Design History

Otis College of Art and Design, long regarded as one of California's major art institutions, was founded in 1918 when Harrison Gray Otis, founder of the Los Angeles Times, bequeathed his Westlake, Los Angeles, property to establish the first public, independent professional school of art in Southern California. The current Otis College main campus (since the spring of 1997) is in the Westchester neighbourhood of Los Angeles, near the Los Angeles International Airport. The main building (completed in 1963) was designed for IBM by architect Eliot Noyes and is notable for its computer "punched card" style windows.

Otis College of Art and Design Programs, Courses, and Schools

 Otis College of Art and Design is well-known for its B.F.A. in fashion design. This program, directed by Rosemary Brantley, is regarded as one of the top fashion design programmes in the United States. Otis Fashion Design is located in downtown Los Angeles at the California Market Center. Students benefit from working closely with design mentors and are trained in all aspects of the design process while simulating a fashion design studio and adhering to the seasonal schedule of the industry. Designers such as Bob Mackie, Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, Diane von Fürstenberg, Isabel Toledo, Isaac Mizrahi, and Todd Oldham have all made appearances. The programme has produced notable designers such as Eduardo Lucero and Rick Owens.

Library

Millard Sheets Library is the name of Otis College of Art and Design's library. The Millard Sheets Library at Otis College of Art & Design is a relaxed environment where creative students can meet, study, browse, and find inspiration. Librarians have compiled a collection that includes 40,000 books, 130,000 electronic books, online databases with millions of articles, and special collections that include 3,000 artist's books. Librarians are dedicated to providing proactive service to students and faculty and are readily available to consult on research needs.

Housing services

The residential and housing department at Otis College of Art and Design provides housing services. For the 2022-23 academic years, Otis College of Art and Design will house four students per apartment/suite, with two students in each bedroom. Foundation students are mostly housed in the Residence Hall, while sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students are mostly housed in Park West's affiliated apartments. The Residence Hall is mostly occupied by first-year students. The Residence Hall allows students to live with their peers while fully immersing themselves in a community of artists and designers. With multiple lounge spaces, students can interact with a diverse population and meet people they might not have met otherwise.

Medical services

Student Health & Wellness Center provides medical services at Otis College of Art and Design. Medical providers at the Student Health & Wellness Center are available to all students Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Otis College of Art and Design's medical services are currently offering Zoom telehealth consultations. Some in-person appointments are also available at Otis College of Art and Design's medical services. Students who need to see a doctor should contact the SHWC at 310.846.5738. You can also use your Owl Care portal to make a Zoom telehealth appointment.

Visas & immigration support

Otis College of Art and Design International students studying full-time at Otis College of Art and Design will do so on an F-1 Student Visa. Otis College will provide eligible admitted students with an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility, which is required to apply for an F-1 Student Visa at a US Embassy/Consulate. After you confirm your tuition deposit ($250), you will receive information about the I-20 Request Process via your applicant portal. To be eligible for the issuance of an I-20, you must have a valid passport, overseas contract information, and proof of financial support for the cost of attendance and living expenses. All required documentation can be uploaded to your applicant portal online. After you have submitted all of your information, the Designated School Official (DSO) will review it and issue your I-20 within 10 days.

Part-time jobs

On-campus student employment is available to currently enrolled full-time degree students, including both Federal Work Study and non-work study positions. Otis College of Art and Design students are permitted to work part-time, and many work-study positions are advertised by campus offices on Handshake, the Career Center's online job posting site.
