The university is deeply engaged in applied research with projects ranging from robotic fish for eco-testing to biocompatible implants and quantum dot microscopy. Multiple patented inventions have been filed by OvGU, including: A mixing device with reversed coiled flow (2020 application, published 2022). Techniques and devices for monitoring electrical energy storage, liquid supply systems, and cavitation-resistant surface coatings (patents/applications between 2021–2022) .
In June 2019, an OvGU-led project developed robotic fish replicas to replace live animals in environmental flow testing at hydroelectric plants—promoting ethical and scalable ecological assessments
In 2019, the University’s control engineers—led by Prof. Rolf Findeisen—developed Scanning Quantum Dot Microscopy, enabling rapid, high-resolution mapping of molecular electrical potentials using a quantum‑dot probe technique
