Parsons School of Design

Parsons School of Design, or simply Parsons, is a private art and design college in New York City's Greenwich Village.

Parsons School of Design History

The Parsons School of Design was founded in 1896 in Manhattan by the American impressionist painter William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) as the Chase School. Chase hired Frank Alvah Parsons as a professor at the school in 1904. At the same time, Parsons was studying at Columbia University under the tutelage of avant-garde artist and educator Arthur Wesley Dow. He earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts in 1905 and became the sole director of the New York School of Art in 1911. His vision resulted in a number of firsts at the school, including the establishment of the first fashion design (originally costume design) programmes in 1904, interior design (originally interior decoration) programmes in 1906, and graphic design (originally advertising and commercial illustration) programmes in 1910. To reflect the new offerings that would combine art and design, the school was renamed the New York School of Fine and Applied Art in 1909. In 1941, the school was renamed the Parsons School of Design.
